Insider Insights: Unlocking the Full Potential of Your Candles and Wax Melts
Choose the Right Candle
Opt for candles with sturdy containers or holders that won't easily tip over. Make sure the candle is designed for its intended use, such as decoration, ambiance, or aromatherapy.
To get the most out of your new candle there are a few hints and tips to help you along the way.
The first burn should be at least one hour per inch of container diameter. This enables the candle wax to melt and reach the edge of the vessel. This enables your candle wax to reach the parameters of the vessel on each subsequent burn. Candles leave memory rings ( also known as tunnelling) if you allow this, by insufficient burn time on the first burn, the candle will simply burn in the same way once it's lit again.
Once your candle has got to 5mm, it is time to stop burning. This will ensure that no damage is caused.
Wood Wicks
Taking care of your wood wick is essential to a long lasting candle. You should trim your wick to around 3mm before burning your candle or after every four hours of burning.
In the absence of trimming your wick, the burnt wick may fall into the molten wax and be a fire hazard. It can also emit an unpleasant smell.
This is one step of candle care that most people ignore, but it will help your candle last longer and smell fresh every time.
Cotton Wicks
Trimming your cotton wick is quite easy to do, it’s also vital to prevent the wick mushrooming. Long, or crooked wicks can create high flames, smoking, or sooting.
Simply wipe off the charred top with some tissue (when it's cool, of course) and try and cut down the wick to around a quarter of an inch, allowing for a beautifully bright flame and slow burning.
Wax Melts
Store your wax melts in a cool dry place and try to keep them sealed to prevent fragrance loss.
Maximum burn time should be no more than four hours. Please see our safety guide for further information.
